New York 2011 : New York: shot mostly in black and white because the lighting was bad (high overcast, lots of haze) and because there's something about New York that makes black and white seem like a good idea. I toyed with the idea of taking a film body and Tri-X, but ultimately decided against it for a variety of reasons relating to digitization and the fact that I can't find a 2CR5 battery anywhere these days.

KSFO DLH A380 : DLH started A388 service to KSFO on 10 May. The next day, I flew out of KSFO, and learned that the A388 is (a) monstrously big and (b) really ugly. I knew both of those things before, to be honest, but they didn't really resonate with me until my B744 ended up sitting on the ramp because it turns out that DLH454 is so big it needs most of the maneuvering area of the airport to itself. Anyway, this was the first time I'd seen an A388 up close. (I did see a QFA A388 at KLAX last winter, but it was dark.)

Japan 2011 (Monkeys) : Up on the side of Mt. Arashiyama is the Iwatayama Monkey Park (嵐山モンキーパーク), home to 170-ish Japanese macaque monkeys. It's a bit of a hike -- ten minutes from the Keifuku Randen Arashiyama station, then another 20-25 minutes up the side of the mountain, depending on how fast and fit you are.

ANA Suite Lounge (NRT) : The ANA Suite Lounge (Narita Airport, Terminal 1, Satellite 4, 4F), for passengers with first class tickets on ANA or other Star Alliance carriers. You won't want to leave here. While the ANA Lounge on 2F in the same satellite is very nice, this one is nicer. We were the only two non-staff people in there, and while I wouldn't call the level of service fawning, exactly, it was very hard to carry anything -- beer, noodles, donburi, other food -- back to our chairs. It's dead quiet, there are spectacular views of the ramp, and the ambiance is that of a seriously good Japanese hotel: peaceful and relaxing, exactly what an airline lounge should be. (This was in stark contrast to the scene that greeted me at YVR Domestic Maple Leaf Lounge 12-ish hours and three segments later, where I had to listen to a somewhat racist hockey fan describe his exploits and theories from halfway across the lounge area. I would have thrown something, but I'd been up for 22 hours at that point...) Sadly, I neglected to try the shower suites here, so I don't even have pictures. Sorry about that.

Hawaii -- January 2011 : The vast, vast, vast majority of these pictures were taken on Sunday, 16 January 2011 from the beachfront between Kolea and the Hilton Waikoloa Village. (This area probably has a name, but I'm too stupid to remember what it is, or look it up for that matter.) This is provided primarily as an illustration of how big the waves were (12-14') and why the entirety of the west coast of the Big Island has been under a High Surf Warning or Advisory since that weekend. Surfers are included for scale. Sadly, many of these pictures are not the greatest, technically-speaking, because I had to use the digital zoom feature (hack! spit!) on the camera to get close enough to the human-sized figures out there. This is one of the perils of traveling light, photographically-speaking... Also included: three pictures from our involuntary one-night stay in San Francisco (the best city in the world to be stuck in, for my money).

June 2010 International Fleet Review : 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Navy (er, Canadian Forces Maritime Command). Point being, it's been 100 years since Canada has had a Navy that it could call its own, and being that we have one of the two main bases in the country located in our backyard, there were a few things going on to celebrate. The ships were either inaccessible or hard to see, so there aren't any pictures of them (except accidentally); instead, please enjoy some pictures of things in the sky! Because nothing says "Go Navy!" like a bunch of stuff with wings. You know. Also: hey, is a Canon G11 any good for taking airplane photographs? You tell me.

And The Sky, Full of Fire : July, 1999. I went to sleep at about five thirty in the afternoon, waking sometime around eight to a beautiful light filling my west-facing bedroom through a crack in the curtains. I pulled the cloth aside and was treated to a blood-red sky with golden highlights; grabbing my clothes and camera gear, I threw myself into the car and drove like a man possessed to the top of Mount Tolmie, the highest place I could get without having to go too far. Hundreds of other Victorians had the same idea. I parked and scrambled up to the summit where I set up and stood, watching the light change, mesmerized by the interplay of color, shadow, and cloud. I don't remember a lot of conversation between the people who stood up there with me that night. Quiet murmurs were the extent of the conversation. We turned to each other, made eye contact, nodded once, content in the knowledge we were witnessing something that was rare in Victoria -- that was rare anywhere, but especially rare here. We knew it was a gift from the world to us, and we wanted to savor every minute of it. I grew up in southern Alberta, and throughout my years there, I would look forward to autumn and the harvest season, when the work of hundreds of combines and grain trucks would turn the sky the most beautiful colors -- gold, blood red, purple, azure, hunter green -- and I would watch as the sun set and changed the way I looked at the world. If the forests were burning, or if it had been a bad year for grass fires, my streets would become red then, too. Intellectually I knew it was because of the smoke and dust particles in the air; romantically, I liked to think it was summer's last stand. Whatever the cause, it was inspiring and absolutely wonderful to watch. The most vivid memory of living in Alberta, I think, was driving from Lethbridge to Calgary along Route 519, heading west into the setting sun just after Labor Day in 1995. It was harvest time, and there'd been grass fires in the Porcupine Hills a few days earlier, so the air was thick with particulate. The sky looked like it was on fire, lit by the sun and scorching every cloud it touched. I loved every minute of it, driving into the sunset, listening to Paula Cole and wondering if I would ever see something so beautiful again. I moved out to the coast the following spring, and I haven't seen a fall in southern Alberta since. We simply don't get the same kinds of colors out here -- we don't get thunderstorms, we don't get windstorms, we don't get the extremes of weather you get on the prairies. It's hard to reproduce such memorable moments, even in Alberta. But this came close. In her novel Restlessness, Aritha Van Herk wrote, I travel to escape the rotund, belligerent light of the foothills, the knife of high cerulean blue. Light is seldom muted in Calgary, sometimes gray if snow or rain plunge over the city, but that temporary reprieve seems aberrant, and until the dazzle returns, people look puzzled. Visitors arrive in order to shade their eyes at the teeth miraging the western skyline. Fall and spring are best, for then the mountains are sharp echoes outlined with snow. I don't think I've ever read anything that so elegantly captures the essence of land and light in Alberta. I miss it. Tech details: EOS 50E, 100-300 4.5-5.6 at the long range, tripod, ballhead, RVP 50. The scans were done on a cheap flatbed; they probably should be redone on a drum, so I'm sorry about that.
